Mac OS 7 Setup


The following section assumes that you have a correct and stable installation of Mac OS 7.


Before You Begin
The following programs are required to get you connected to the Internet.

  • MacTCP or TCP/IP Control Panel
  • ConfigPPP or FreePPP Control Panel

If you have System 7.5, these programs can be found in your control panels folder or can be installed from your system disks (or CD-ROM). However, if you are using an older operating system, MacTCP is not included. .

If any component, including extensions, have been previously installed on your system, We highly recommend that you delete them and perform a clean install. This is the only way to be absolutely certain of proper installation.



Once you have installed the needed programs, restart your machine. While this is not absolutely necessary, restarting is highly recommended because MacTCP will sometimes crash your system if it wasn’t initialized at boot time.

Preparation for MacTCP/ConfigPPP
Clean Installation

It's a good idea to do a clean install of MacTCP and ConfigPPP. If you have either component previously installed, or if you're trying to troubleshoot a problematic connection, it's better to start with a clean slate. Follow the instructions and screen shots below to remove MacTCP/ConfigPPP and their associated files.

  • Open your Control Panels folder by selecting it from the System Folder located on your hard disc.
     
  • Locate the MacTCP and ConfigPPP Control Panels.
     
  • Drag them to the trash.
  • Open your Preferences folder by selecting it from the System Folder located on your hard disc.
     
  • Locate the MacTCP Prep file and PPP Preferences file. If you have previously used a different online service such as AOL, locate those files also.
     
  • Drag them to the trash.
  • Open your Extensions folder by selecting it from the System Folder located on your hard disc.
     
  • Locate the PPP extension (and the AOL extension if applicable).
     
  • Drag them to the trash.
     
  • The last item you need to remove is the MacTCP DNR file. It is stored in the System Folder.
     
  • If you have performed the steps above, you are now ready to perform a clean installation.

MacTCP/MacPPP Installation

  • Insert the disk labeled MacTCP and MacPPP and open it by double clicking on the disks icon.
     
  • Open the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop by double-clicking. You should see System Folder as one of its components.
     
  • Click on the MacTCP icon and hold. Drag it on top of the System Folder and drop it there. The files will be put in their correct location.
     
  • Repeat step three with the MacPPP icon.
     
  • Restart Your Computer.
     

MacTCP/MacPPP Configuration


Open the MacTCP Control Panel by selecting it from Control Panels in the Apple Menu, or double-click it in the Control Panels Folder.

  • Make sure that the PPP icon is highlighted.
     
  • Set the IP Address to 0.0.0.0.
     
  • Click on More...
     
  • Set Obtain Address to Server.
     
  • Set the Gateway Address to 0.0.0.0
     
  • Set the Class to C by clicking on the drop down box.
     
  • Set Address to 0.0.0.0
     
  • Set Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0
     
  • Under Domain Name Server Information, the information must be entered exactly as shown.
     
  • Click on OK to finish configuring MacTCP.
     
  • Restart your Computer.
     

Configuring ConfigPPP (or FreePPP)

  • Open ConfigPPP from the Control Panel.
     
  • Hangup on Close and Quiet Mode should be checked.
     
  • Your modem is probably connected to the Modem Port. If not, use the popup menu to change it.
     
  • Click on New
     
  • Enter YOUR ISP's NAME to name your PPP connection.
     
  • Click on Config.
     
  • Next to Port Speed use the pop-up menu to choose the highest speed (in bps) that your modem supports. (19200 for a 14.4 modem, 33600 for a 28.8, 57600 for a 33.6, and 115200 for a 57.6.)
     
  • Flow Control should be set to CTS Only.
     
  • Click the radio button which matches your phone line.
     
  • Enter the phone number you will be dialing. If you have call waiting, add *70 to disable it while you are online.
     
  • The Modem Init string is different for each modem, so consult your modem documentation.
     
  • Click on Authentication. Enter your user name and password exactly as printed on your configuration sheet. Click on Done.
     
  • Click on Done and restart your computer.
     


Opening the Internet Connection

Test your configuration by connecting to us using the ConfigPPP Control Panel.

  • Click the Open button at the top of the window.
  • You will be prompted to enter your user name and password.
  • If all goes well, you will be connected to the Internet. You can tell from the PPP handshake (or smiley face depending upon version).
  • In the future, when you open up most any Internet application, it will automatically look for a MacTCP connection.


How to End the Connection

In the ConfigPPP Control Panel click Soft Close to complete setup
